Sardona Glacier

Where the Sardona Glacier lies today, in times gone by stood the most beautiful Alp in the entire Sernftal. This Alp belonged to he farmer Segnes. Segnes was gifted it by his father on his deathbed, on the condition, that he took good care of his mother.

Sardona was the bride of Segnes. A beautiful und rich girl, but full of pride and meanness The mother, who expected nothing good of her future daughter in law, advised her so nto marry another girl. But the dark eyes of Sardona were more compelling than his mother's words.

With the arrival of summer, Segnes climbed the Alp. His old, sich mother stayed behind in the village. After a while, she had nothing more to eat. Segnes, who had promised to take care of her, sent her nothing more. In desperation, the old, sich woman made the journey tot he Alp. Near death's door, she reached her son's hut and asked for a little milk. He took a bowl, filled it with pig feed, and passed it to her.

Without a word, his mother stood up and made her way into the valley to die. As she walked slowly across the land in front of the hut, Sardona approached full of pride and arrogance. Quickly Segnes fetched a wheel of cheese from the cellar and placed it on the ground so that Sardona would not dirty her shoes. Behind his mother he called out: « A very different reception indeed!» His mother turned and with the last of her strength said: «And there you will stay, together for all time!»

No sooner had she spoken the words, did the sky become black and it began to rain. It rained all day long. Then it began to snow and it snowed throughout the entire night. The next mornig, Alp an hut had vanished. A huge glacier had covered everything, as it does to this day.

Once a year a small slit opens up in the glacier an Segnes and Sardona come up tot he edge. They entreat Segnes' mother to recant her curse. Then, they listen all around, but there is only deathly silence and Segnes and Sardona must return to their cold prison.
