The Auen-Balz

Today it is no longer visible, thanks to the firn, but in olden times there was a luscious meadow on the Schafselbsanft. That it now lies forever under the ice, is the fault of Balz. He was the last Alpine farmer, who wanted to take his cattle at Limmern to the Alp. As he was about to cross the Pantenbridge, he saw an old lady far below in the gorge. She called him and asked him to help her climb out. But Balz said: «If all you do is sit there, why did you climb down?» and laughed.

Many days pass and Balz sits outside tending to his livestock. Then all of a sudden there is a bang and the firn begins to move taking everything with it, stones, huts, and cattle. Even Balz himself couldn't escape and was forced down over the ridge with everything else. When he was already too far over the side he saw the old woman once again. She rode down with the firn from above, driving him in front of her and said: «Now it is my turn to laugh!»
